Steenberg Catharina Red Blend 750ml (12.5% Alc/Vol)
STEENBERG CATHARINA RED BLEND
As the first Bordeaux-style blend composition in almost a decade; the Catharina is bold yet suave, forthright yet subtle, assured and alluring. It displays volumes of cherry and cigar, coffee and vanilla, cranberry compote and dark chocolate. Layers of concentrated red and black fruit (raspberry, blackcurrant and black cherry) show on both the nose and the palate, accented with a velvety texture from the Petit Verdot. Light herbal notes from the Merlot lend a refreshing finish, while the new varieties of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon round out the blend, adding structure and depth. Dark fruit and spice, lifting acidity and an encompassing tannic finish.
The Story Behind Steenberg
Catharina Ras, Steenberg’s fearless founder, lived a life of extraordinary resilience and daring. Born in Germany, she was widowed young and disguised herself as a man to stow away to the Cape in 1662. There she endured repeated tragedy, husbands lost to violence and wild animals, yet each time she rebuilt her life with courage and determination. Legends even tell of her hunting down the lion that killed her first husband, a tale that captures her indomitable spirit.
By 1682, Catharina petitioned Governor Simon van der Stel for land beneath Steenberg Mountain, becoming South Africa’s first female landowner. From her bold vision, Steenberg was born, an estate forever defined by independence, innovation, and a deep sense of place. Today, her legacy is celebrated in wines such as the Catharina Blend, a tribute to her strength and pioneering spirit, carrying forward the character of the land she claimed with such audacity.
